To-do Lists & Why I Love Them

January 18, 2010

You have too much to do: schoolwork, clean-up, pay bills, laundry, grocery shopping, the list goes on.  You have trouble sleeping because you have so much to think about, and you live in constant fear of forgetting something important (which you do on a regular basis).  You’ve tried phone reminders, ical, email reminders – but these things take too long to program in, and besides they crowd up your inbox.  Maybe you should try it the old-fashioned way and make a list.

Why this works:

  1. If you bring it everywhere you go, you can write down a task at the very moment you think of it.
  2. Can’t sleep? Pull out your to-do list and jot down everything that’s keeping you up.  That way, you’ll be able sleep soundly without being afraid you’ll forget everything you need to do in the morning.
  3. It is incredibly satisfying to be able to check something off your list.  Sometimes I like to cross them out with strong lines – now, not only do you have an organized list of things to do, but also a list of things you’ve accomplished.  So at the end of the day, you know exactly how productive you’ve been.
  4. If you make a habit of writing down your tasks, you’ll be amazed at how much more organized and together you feel.  Just try not to leave your list anywhere – it feels almost like forgetting your phone!
